Description
Heavy cast iron tin opener in the form of a bull. Curved bar with bull's head at one end and other end turned under finishing at a tail, joined to 'body'. Head realistically modelled. Blade fits through slot behind head, short triangular punch at top and long curved blade on underside; this blade fastened with (replacement) nut and screw. Extensive traces of green paint all over body, not orginal.
Comments
Early tin openers were often in form of a bull's head as the first mass produced tinned food was 'bully beef' for the troops. (Curtis, A. "The Lyle Official Antiques Review, 1985")
