DescriptionHamiltons mallet, used during brushmaking process. Wooden handle with cylindrical head showing signs of use.
CommentsTo prepare the bristles ready to be fitted onto the handle, first the hair must be straightened by tightly binding it to a stick and then heated in a steam oven (2017:77). A laying-up band (2017:82) is knocked tightly onto the bristle with a mallet (2017:76) and the root of the bevelled knot is trimmed level (2017:78), before being dipped in rubber (2017:79). A ferrule is attached, and the brush head trimmed (2017:80) ready to be fitted onto the handle (2017:81).
