Comments
The Air Raid Precautions (ARP) service was set up in 1937 to protect civilians from air raids. From 1st September 1939, ARP wardens enforced the ‘blackout’. Heavy curtains and shutters were required on all private residences, commercial premises and factories. This was to prevent light escaping through windows, making these buildings a visible target for enemy bombers at night. During the Blitz, the ARP were vital in reporting and dealing with bombing incidents, managing air-raid sirens, and directing civilians to shelters.
