RepositoryHarrow Museum Collection
Ref NoHMC/N/1/2017:31
ObjectNumber2017:31
Date17th Century
DescriptionCivil war trading token. Half penny. Obverse: anchor; reverse: 'I. E. M.' (initials of minter John Millgate and his wife).
CommentsMinted by John Millgate of Harrow Hill. Tokens were produced to supplement Crown currency during the Civil War, as no new ‘sovereign’ coins were minted at this time. Each district produced their own tokens; this one was produced for Harrow-on-the-Hill. The tokens became illegal when Charles II was restored to the throne. Most tokens that have been found have been defaced, presumably when they became illegal, so these are particularly unusual.
