Description
Hamiltons brushmaking process model - banded dressing. The bristles are bound by a metal laying up band.
Comments
To prepare the bristles ready to be fitted onto the handle, first the hair must be straightened by tightly binding it to a stick and then heated in a steam oven (2017:77). A laying-up band (2017:82) is knocked tightly onto the bristle with a mallet (2017:76) and the root of the bevelled knot is trimmed level (2017:78), before being dipped in rubber (2017:79). A ferrule is attached, and the brush head trimmed (2017:80) ready to be fitted onto the handle (2017:81).
