AdminHistory | In 1868, the General Post Office was formed as a government department. It absorbed competitor the National Telephone Company in 1912, and became the dominant communications company in the first half of the 20th Century. In 1969 the company was nationalised, becoming the Post Office and Post Office Telecommunications. The official name of Post Office Telecommunications changed to British Telecom in 1981, and once again became a state owned corportation, independent of the Post Office. British Telecom privatised again in 1984, and in 1991 changed its name to BT. The BT archives hold all of the archival records for the past iterations. |
