Description
Print reproduction of lithograph showing a view of High Street, Harrow on the Hill, 1824, by Nathaniel Whittock. Two young men associated with Harrow School walk across the central road, carrying cricket bats. On the left, a child plays with a hoop on the pavement. St Mary's church and buildings associated with Harrow School are seen in distance on a hill, framed by trees. Beneath the lithograph are two verses from Byron's Lines Written Beneath an Elm in the Churchyard of Harrow (1807): 'Spot of my youth! whose hoary branches sigh,/ Swept by the breeze that fans thy cloudless sky;/ Where now alone I muse, who oft have trod,/ With those I lov'd, thy soft and verdant sod;/ With those who scatter'd far, perchance deplore,/ Like me, the happy scenes they knew before:/ Oh! as I trace again thy winding hill,/ Mine eyes admire, my heart adores thee still'. Title printed at bottom centre: 'Harro on the Hill'. Artist and publication details below: 'Drawn from nature and on stone by N. Whittock, Lithographer to the University of Oxford, Sept 1824'.
