Description	Colour photographic print showing a Coal Tax Post at Potter Street Hill, Pinner. Discoloured white cast-iron post rising out of the grass. Decorated with arms of City of London and plaque "ACT / 24 & 25 VICT / CAP 42" below. Wooden fence and footpath in background. Notes in pen and pencil on reverse, including name of photographer from North Harrow.
Comments	Accompanied by a paper with typewritten information regarding the posts: "A City Post at Potter Street Hill These posts bearing the City of London arms and "Act 24 & 25 Vict. Cap 42", could be found in many places within the Metropolitan Police District of 1861. They were placed there under an Act of that year, which gave power to the Corporation to renew duties on wine and coal, for the purpose of road improvements, etc., The wine duty started under an Act of William and Mary. The coal duty went back in ancient rights of meterage of all coal coming into the Port of London, such rights being definitely recognised by a Charter of James I. After the Fire of London, a duty was levied on the vending and delivery of coal to raise money for [xxx] rebuilding the City and later was applied to the acquisition of open spaces."
